TPSP Process Paper
Dorothea Lange has always been a favorite photographer and figure of mine; that’s why I conducted my History Fair project on her leadership and legacy this past fall. However, her leadership and legacy was not enough for me. I needed more. For my TPSP project, I decided to focus on her influence and the connection of her photos from then and others’ photos today. I also pondered the thought of “What if I became Dorothea Lange?”. The answer seemed to pop out at me. I needed to connect her time with our time, but more importantly, I needed to simulate what it is like to be Lange. Therefore, I chose to take a photographic journey of the twenty first century as if I were Dorothea herself.
I went off of a lot of my earlier research as a start, but then I added on to my research and took a more special focus to her influence on today’s photography. I interviewed a few experts on Lange, including her granddaughter, Dyanna Taylor. I used a variety of sources including web sites, books, newspapers and more. To complete my research, I began to take pictures like Dorothea. I visited old buildings downtown and observed people at a local park to inspire myself like Dorothea would. Lastly, I put all of these elements together and composed my web site.
I chose to do a web site because I wanted to share my information with more than the judges. I want to educate anyone who accesses the web and has an interest in my subject. I also believe that a technological platform is easiest to show my pictures. I chose to use Weebly as my web site maker because of the convenience, and it has been recommended to me for educational purposes.
I chose a very subtle theme with little color to represent her pictures’ style. I organized my web site my sorting my short essay topics as a page each. These included a biography of Lange, her influence, my photography project, etc.
Dorothea Lange is important to us because she changed photography forever and brought light to a forgotten people. She recognized the need in the Great Depression, so she documented the injustice and encouraged legislation to help migrant workers, poor families, and people in poverty. Lange also showed human nature in a raw, real way that few photographers before her could do. Dorothea Lange began an era that uses the camera to show the true American life, whether we like it or not.
